OFF-ROAD WOES
"NASCAR Winston Cup star Dale Earnhardt Jr. has
escaped his share of trouble on the race track. But
an apparent foray while four-wheeling with friends may
not be as easy to sidestep as a multicar collision
unfolding ahead of him on the track."
"Earnhardt Jr., was charged with trespassing earlier
this year in Lincoln County, after he and four friends
were stopped on private property by a Lincoln Co.
deputy. His trial date has been scheduled for April
17."
"Contacted March 25, officials with Earnhardt Jr.'s
race team, Dale Earnhardt Inc., said they have no
comment on the matter at this time."
MODEL DRIVER
"You're used to seeing Dale Earnhardt Jr. dressed in a
T-shirt, worn-out jeans and a baseball cap turned
around backward, exemplifying the Generation X image.
Imagine the shock and surprise of seeing him standing
in a fancy department store, decked out in designer
jeans, a V-neck sweater and a leather jacket, his hair
slicked back enough to make him look as if he just
stepped out of the pages of GQ."
"That was the scene March 21 when Junior showed up at
the Belk's department store at Southpoint Mall in
Durham, N.C., to help hawk Drakkar Noir cologne, an
associate sponsor that is starting to attract about as
much pub as Budweiser."
"With a chance to meet Junior and get a die-cast race
car with each purchase, the appearance attracted about
500 people, much to the surprise of store clerks."
"It's been complete pandemonium," employee Shana
Stoval told the "Raleigh News & Observer". "I've seen
people with 'I love you, Dale' painted on their
fingernails, and I can't count how many credit cards
I've run that had his or his father's pictures on
them."
"It's no wonder. As L'Oreal, USA has discovered,
Junior is hotter than warm beer at Talladega. Since
aligning its brand with him, Drakkar Noir officials
claim the cologne has risen from 15th in sales to
first."
"As was evident in Durham, it's easy to see why."
"He's so cute and wonderful," Meghan Renfrow of Durham
said after purchasing her bottle. "He can pull it off
because he's young and he's cute and all the girls
like him."
"Junior doesn't mind the deviation from his more

he's getting from fellow drivers, most of whom saw
Junior's Drakkar Noir banner when they landed at the
airport in Daytona."
